What are the benefits and contraindications to taking yoga in a heated room?As with any exercise program, you should seek the advice of your health care provider before starting a new regimen, particularly if you have existing health concern. That said, most people receive extraordinary benefits from hot yoga. With regular practice, you will notice weight loss and a more sculpted body as early as two weeks into it. The heat aids in increased flexibility, deeper stretches, and the detoxification of skin, blood, and muscles as well as aiding in the healing of scar tissue. Many people report an overall improvement in both mental and physical health and remark on the support yoga provides for chronic health issues. There are some circumstances where hot yoga can be contraindicated:
- Pregnant women should refrain from hot yoga. In some cases, women who have practiced yoga for many years in a heated room can continue their practice but generally, heat is contraindicated during the months of gestation. We encourage mothers-to-be to find a prenatal yoga class to assist them during this journey.
- Those who have been medically diagnosed with heart disease, high blood pressure, lupus and glaucoma should consult their physician before participating in a “hot” yoga class.
What do I wear? You will sweat so dress lightly! Wear comfortable clothing that wicks away moisture. Women generally wear shorts or capri yoga pants and a camisole or sleeveless t-shirt. Men wear yoga shorts and a sleeveless t-shirt. Bring a large towel (beach towels work best) or purchase a non-slip YogiToes towel to soak up the sweat and keep you safely on your mat. What if I have injuries? Most of our classes may be vigorous for someone who is working with recent and/or severe injury. It is recommended that you first consult your doctor before starting any exercise program. However, many students have healed injury taking these styles of yoga. With proper care, attention, and modifying your practice, you can expect amazing transformation and healing. If you are brand new to yoga and working with injury, it is recommended that you schedule a private yoga session before taking an open level class. How often should I do yoga?Yoga is a daily practice. If you are new to yoga we recommend practicing at least 3 times a week to begin teaching the body muscle memory of just the sequences. You will gain a better idea of how to modify the practice to best suit your strengths and weaknesses. Once you establish this routine, you may begin taking class everyday and start to see your body and life transform!**Key Notes
- It is important to practice on an empty stomach, so eat at least 2-3 hours before class to receive maximum benefits. Also arrive well hydrated so that you do not have to break the flow of your practice or the physiological process by taking sips during class.
- Please arrive at least 10-15 minutes before class begins to properly prepare your body and minds for the journey.
- We ask that you observe silence when entering the asana room in order to contribute to a harmonious atmosphere and respect the space of your fellow practitioners.
- Please do your best to stay inside the asana room throughout practice to maintain the focus and energy flow of the class. If you have an emergency, feel free to step out and ask the receptionist for assistance.
- We encourage you to practice compassion and non-violence during your journeys by listening to your bodies, not judging yourselves or others, respecting and knowing your limitations, and not worrying so much about “how it looks”. Remember that the postures are only one component to the eight -limbed system.
